I am excited to begin our twelfth year of book club at WJMS. I talked to all classes about joining during our media center orientation this year and I’m looking forward to working with another great group of kids. I’ve been reading all summer and have picked out some pretty good novels for us to read together. No hints will be given though so don’t ask! 🙂
Our first meeting will be on Thursday, September 3rd from 3:30 until 4:00 in the media center. This meeting will introduce you to the activities Book Club is involved with during the year and help us to get to know one another. Please come see me if you are unable to come to the meeting and are interested in Book Club.
Students may drop by the media center to pick up a book club contract. They are located on the circulation desk by the laptop. The deadline for returning them is Friday, September 18th. Once I know how many I will have this year, I will be able to order our first book. I plan to distribute our first novel sometime in October.
Reading Survey
Our next Book Club meeting will be on Thursday, September 24th in the media center until 4:30.
At our first meeting, I created activities for us to get to know one another better so that we are more comfortable sharing thoughts during our book discussions. We started with the Wonderball Know It All. For this activity, the group created a circle. Students took turns throwing a beach ball with numbers on it to each other. When they caught it, they called out the number nearest their right thumb. I read out the corresponding question to them to answer. I was able to gather some great information about the kids on questions such as, “What is your biggest phobia?”, “On a scale of 1-10, how hip are you?”, and “What is something you couldn’t live without?”. One of the activities was to create a Google Drawing of themselves using the effects on Photofunia.com to reflect their personality. Below are some of the results. I think they were very creative and did a great job!
Our next meeting is Thursday, October 1st until 4:30. I have our first book!
Book Club met on October 1st to receive their first book of the year, The Six by Mark Alpert.
Avatar meets The Terminator in this thrilling cyber-tech adventure
Crippled by muscular dystrophy, Adam spends his days playing virtual reality games, until a dangerously advanced artificial intelligence program that can control other machines tries to kill him.
Created by Adam’s father, Sigma has escaped its cyber prison and is threatening world domination. In order to stop Sigma, Adam and five other terminally ill teens sacrifice their bodies and upload their minds into weaponized robots. Together, The Six must learn how to manipulate their new mechanical forms—and prepare for epic combat—before Sigma destroys humanity.

I hope everyone is ready for Halloween! It is definitely one of my favorite holidays of the year. I have scheduled a two-part craft activity for you guys next week making “spooky books”. Since they will need to dry, the activity will need two days to complete. We will meet on Monday, October 26th until 4:30 and again on Wednesday, October 28th until 4:00 to make them. See the attachments so that you can get an idea of what we will be doing. Let me know if you guys have questions or won’t be able to attend. See you soon!
At our meeting to discuss The Six, we Skyped with author Mark Alpert and asked him questions about his book.
In our December meeting students received their next book, Thirteen Days to Midnight by Patrick Carman.
Our next meeting scheduled for January 21st until 4:30 for our book discussion.
2014-2015
Our next Book Club meeting will be on Thursday, September 25th after school in the media center until 4:30. I finally have received our first book!
At our September meeting, Book Club members met to receive their first book of the year. As usual, students had to figure out the title before they could receive the book. For this meeting, members divided into teams. Each team used an iPad to scan QR codes placed around the library for clues. Once they figured it out, each clue revealed a letter that made up the one-word title of their book. Students had to use the library catalog and Internet searches to help. After revealing that they would be reading Haunters by Thomas Taylor, students watched the book trailer and I read the first few pages of the book to them. I hope they enjoy it!
Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 28th and I have a HUGE surprise for the students. More details coming soon.
We enjoyed meeting Thomas Taylor and talking with him about his book. The club members received a big surprise when they showed up for the scheduled meeting. I told them we had 15 minuted to prepare the meet the author. What?! They were so surprised…even more so when I told them he was from the UK! Our first Skype session with an author from another country was a success.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 12th until 4:30. We will be working on book recycling crafts for the holidays.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 10th in the media center until 4:15. Make sure you have your ride here on time.

Students received The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die by April Henry at our last meeting.
The only thing Cady knows for sure is that someone wants to kill her.
“Take her out back and finish her off,” is one of the first things the 16-year-old hears when she comes to in an isolated cabin in the woods of Oregon. Suffering from amnesia, Cady doesn’t recall anything about her life, including where she’s from, who her family is or even the excruciating pain of having two fingernails torn off. But her body remembers enough martial arts to incapacitate her captor and escape. When she tries to contact the authorities, they believe she is an escaped patient from a local mental hospital. Is she an insane murderer, as news reports suggest? With no place to hide and everyone a potential liar (including herself), Cady races across the state, piecing together clues and scraps of memories, to try to figure out who she is in this thriller with nonstop twists and turns. Her only ally is Ty, a former homeless teen she meets at a brief fast-food stop. The possibility of biological warfare amps up the suspense, while short chapters and Cady’s direct, first-person narration make the Hollywood-blockbuster–like story pulsate. Although rushed, the ending stays true to the mood and consistent pacing of Cady’s plight.
Book Club will meet on Wednesday, January 28th until 4:30 to discuss The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die.
We had a great meeting to discuss the book. Students enjoyed the book even though they all felt her relationship with Ty was pretty unrealistic. Who helps a crazy girl running from the police with no proof of innocence!? I challenged the group to produce a new cover and title for the book. I think they did a great job and created some pretty creepy covers.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 12th until 4:15. I have book three ready for you!
The WJMS Book Club met March 12th to receive their third and final book of the year. The group will be reading The Eighth Day by Dianne Salerni, which I was able to find through our last Book Fair. After reading a passage to club members, I announced we would be able to Skype with the author during our next meeting in April. I’m looking forward to revealing the surprise our author has graciously provided for them.
Book Club met on Tuesday, April 21st to Skype with author Dianne Salerni. The group asked some wonderful questions about her book, The Eighth Day such as these.
2013-2014 School Year
Our next meeting will be Thursday, September 12th until 4:30 in the media center. Students will receive their first book! Please stop by the media center if you are unable to attend.
Inspired by the upcoming Halloween holiday, Book Club students received The Ghost of Graylock by Dan Poblocki as their first novel. At the meeting students were challenged to figure out the title by receiving a series of clues. The object was to figure out the title with as few clues as possible. The winning group was a team of 8th graders who solved it with only four clues! Everyone did an awesome job and were pretty competitive with one another. For the second part of the meeting, the group started part one in creating a “ghostly” mask. The group left the meeting with a warning not to read the book before bedtime. This novel has some pretty spooky parts! I’m looking forward to our next meeting for their reaction to the book and also to finish the masks. Happy reading!
Book Club met on October 23rd to talk discuss The Ghost of Graylock. Group consensus was that it was a great book. Everyone thought it was pretty creepy and many had a bit of trouble getting to sleep after reading certain parts(even though I warned them!). I enjoyed our group discussion with everyone talking about their favorite part of the book. Equally as interesting was our discussion on their belief in ghosts! Club members then divided into groups to complete the ghost masks we started at our last meeting. I didn’t get as many pictures as I would have liked, but I love how they turned out. My students are so creative. Our next meeting will be in November to distribute our next book. My job is now to find it! Until next month….
Book Club will meet on Wednesday, December 4th until 4:30.
At our December 4th meeting, students received their next book, The Colossus Rises by Peter Lerangis which is the first book in the Seven Wonders series.
Thirteen-year-old Jack McKinley was a normal kid leading a normal life—totally unaware that he was about to die. He’s cursed with a genetic abnormality that’s giving him amazing powers too quickly for his body to handle. Jack’s only hope: Find the seven lost Loculi that were hidden in the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by the last prince of Atlantis. Only they contain the magic to save him—and the world.
After unearthing the first Loculus and defeating the Colossus of Rhodes, Jack and his friends are in worse shape than when they first set out. Marco has disappeared without a trace, along with the first Loculus. With no time to spare and no one else to turn to, Jack and the gang have no choice but to follow the only clues they have and to head off on the next leg of their epic quest—to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon!
Book Club members also participated in the 2nd annual Holiday Games. Our first event featured Ornament Bowling. For the second event, teams had to draw Santa. The catch was they had to draw on a paper plate on top of their head! Probably the favorite event was “Dress Santa”. For this event, team members had to put on a Santa hat and beard. Then they had to put on one bead necklace at a time and say, “Ho, Ho, Ho!” after each one! The final event was to create and decorate a Book Tree. Based on how loud the group was, I would definitely say that everyone had a great time! 🙂
Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 10th until 4:30. Make sure you have read and tested on The Colossus Rises. We will be discussing the book at the meeting.
The Colossus Rises is a mix of Percy Jackson meets Indiana Jones. The main characters find themselves fighting to stay alive while involved in some hair raising adventures. Each book in the Seven Wonders series involves locating loculi at each of the seven Ancient Wonders of the World. For our meeting I decided teams of students should be involved in their own adventure to locate loculi. Teams competed in a series of three elimination events. The first event featured making a crypto wheel cipher to figure out a series of five key terms from the book. The top three teams advanced to the balloon gauntlet. For the balloon gauntlet, students had to crawl through a balloon filled tunnel to find the hidden loculi without popping or displacing balloons. The top two fastest teams advanced to the final competition….the paper laser maze. The event featured a maze of paper streamers students had to crawl through without breaking to retrieve their loculi. The student team with the fastest time won. I had a great time creating this for the kids and I think the kids enjoyed it too. Our next meeting will be to receive our last book of the year!
Book Club will meet on Tuesday, February 25th until 4:30 in the media center. Students will receive their next book and we will be working on activities related to National School Library Month in April. Please let Mrs. Borck know if you are unable to attend.
Book Club will meet on Tuesday, April 23rd until 4:30 to Skype with Joelle Charbonneau, the author of The Testing.
2012-2013 School Year
At our September 13th meeting, I learned that I have some very competitive students in Book Club this year! I held a competition for club members to figure out our first book title. Teams of students received a list of clues to unravel. When deciphered, each clue gave kids a letter in the title of the books. Some clues required searching the library catalog while others had them scanning QR codes. They also had to decipher morse code and braille! The first team to figure out all the clues received a prize.
Competition was fierce but in the end, Deshauna and Neha won by figuring out our first book title is The House of Dark Shadows by Robert Liparulo. Clues
Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 24th until 4:30. Make sure you have read and tested on our book before the meeting.
We used ifaketext.com to create text messages between characters. Clark created the one below between Xander and his dad.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 28th until 4:00. Make sure to let me know if you are unable to attend. We will be receiving our next book!
Book Club students received Legend by Marie Lu. Based on the feedback I have received thus far, they are definitely enjoying this one! Since I had such mixed reviews about our last book, I’m so relieved that students are enjoying it. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 12th until 4:30. Club members will be participating in our 1st annual Holiday Challenge. Details coming soon. You definitely don’t want to miss this one!
Our Holiday Challenge was such fun! The club divided into teams to complete in activities with a holiday theme. One activity required kids to move a Christmas cookie from their forehead to their mouth without using their hands. Lots of interesting faces on this one! Each team got involved with the Decorate-a-tree event in which one team member became the “tree” while all the other teammates decorated them. Pin the nose on Rudolph became a pretty heated event when they debated who actually was the closest. Holiday cup stacker required students to stack as many cups as possible in a pyramid in a minute. Ring the Christmas wreath required the kids to throw as many Christmas ornament balls through a Christmas wreath as possible in one minute. The Elephant Christmas walk required kids to place a pair of tights on their head and knock over as many Christmas cups lined up on the floor as possible in a minute.
Book Club will meet on January 29th from 3:30 until 4:30 to discuss Legend. Make sure you have taken the AR quiz for the book before the meeting.
The four ratings for emoticons are:
=D for Squee! I LOVED it!
=) for It was good – not Great!
=| for Meh…I guess it was just OK.
=( GAH! Did NOT like it a bit!
Our next meeting will be after school on March 4th until 4:00. I have your next book and I think you are going to like it…think Harry Potter for girls!
I have some great news for Book Club members. Shannon Messenger, author of Keeper of the Lost Cities has agreed to Skype with us! Make sure to get your books finished soon. I have the Skype session scheduled for Thursday, April 4th from 3:30 until 4:30.
We had an awesome Skyping session with author Shannon Messenger. She was very personable and answered all the questions that students had for her. Though we were only supposed to talk for 30 minutes, Shannon graciously kept answering our questions for almost an hour! See highlights below.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 14th until 4:30. Make sure to bring pennies(25) with you. I have some activities planned so think CRAFTS! This will definitely not be a typical Book Club meeting for us.
2011-2012 School Year
Our first meeting will be on Thursday, August 25th after school in the media center until 4:15. This will be an introductory meeting to discuss what book club is all about and to get to know each other. Those who have not already picked up a Book Club Contract will receive one. Contracts must be signed and returned by next Friday, September 2nd so that I may order the correct number of books.
Getting to Know Book Club Members
1. What is your favorite fiction genre? Is mystery, historical, adventure, science fiction, etc. Least favorite?
2. What is your favorite book of all time?
3. Do you have any book suggestions for the club to read?
4. Why do you want to be in book club?
Alphabet Soup Activity
Book club will meet Monday, October 3rd to receive their first book. I’m so sorry it has taken so long to get books to you but they have been on backorder! I have big plans for the reveal of the book though. Has anyone ever heard of QR codes? Following a series of clues revealed by QR codes, book club members will find out our first book of the year.
I had a great time with Book Club members using QR codes as clues to find out the name of our first book. We are reading The Great, Wide, Sea by M.H. Herlong. The kids were excited to find out we would be talking with the author via Skype too! Our next meeting will be Wednesday, November 2nd until 4:30. We will be discussing the book and gathering questions for our author. Our Skype visit with her will be on Wednesday, November 16th.
Soon after their mother’s death, 15-year-old Ben and his two younger brothers are stunned when their father sells their home, buys a sailboat, and announces that they will live on board and cruise the Bahamas for the next year. Wrenched from everything he knows and forced to obey his father-captain’s orders, Ben starts out angry and finds no escape. As he says, “We were always together.” When their father sets a course for Bermuda and disappears overboard one night, the boys have little time to wonder if he jumped or fell before they’re struggling to stay afloat in a fierce Atlantic storm. Lost at sea in a damaged boat, they find their way to an island where they are stranded with little food, little water, and little hope of rescue.
Our Skype session with M.H. Herlong was wonderful and the kids were fantastic. Since they read the book at the same time, we were able to video conference with Southeast Bulloch Middle School’s book club too. Students were able to ask her questions about The Great, Wide, Sea that the group had wondered about since reading the book. Being able to incorporate technology in the meeting enabled us to get up close and personal with her as well. We even found out about her family and her pets…and got to see the room where she writes! Huge thanks to the author for working with us to make the event happen. I could not sum up the event better than a student’s comment to me after the meeting, “Awesome, Mrs. Borck!” 🙂
Before the holidays, Book Club members met to receive their next book. During the meeting students were challenged to figure out the next selection by unscrambling words that were clues. Since this was a timed event with a prize for the winner, they enjoyed the competition. After revealing the answers, students were still unsure about the book title described by keywords such as Winnie the Pooh, state fair , and hula hoop. The final step in solving the mystery involved Googling combinations of the keywords to figure out the title of second book was Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life by Wendy Mass. I read a selection of the book to them and showed them the movie trailer. They were excited to hear the movie starring Mira Sorvino will be released directly to DVD in March.
We are on the hunt for mutant candy!
Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 31st. We will be discussing Jeremy Fink and the meaning of Life so make sure to bring your book with you. Be prepared for our hula hoop contest and don’t forget to bring your mutant candy too!
Book Club met on Tuesday, February 28th to receive their new book. I have chosen realistic fiction this time and I hope all my students enjoy it as much as I did. Our third book of the year is …..
The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen
With the release of the Hunger Games movie, Book Club met on Monday, March 26th for a special activity related to the current theme for the media center. Students gathered to participate in the WJMS version of The Hunger Games. For more information about the event, see the current post on the main page with some great pictures.
For our last meeting we will discuss The Running Dream and I have a special treat for everyone…pizza! Make sure to bring your book to the meeting. Our special activities this month will involve what it is like to live with a disability.
2010-2011 School Year
I want to welcome everyone to the second year of book club. Since we lost our RIF funding, I am very excited to be able to continue working with a group of fellow bibliophiles. Students will meet once or twice a month after school in the media center. Club members will receive free books to use for our book discussions. Once students have been given a new book to read, they may use this blog page to hold discussions about the book until our next club meeting. I will post thought-provoking questions to lead discussions. If you are interested in joining, see Mrs. Borck in the media center.
The first meeting will be held in the media center from 3:45 until 4:30 on Thursday, August 26th. I will talk about the changes to book club for this year and I will distribute the Book Club Contract. All contracts are due September 10th so make sure to get yours in on time.

Our next meeting will be October 7th until 4:00 for book distribution. Our First Book Is….
Book Club is reading The Crossbones, the third installment in the Skeleton Creek series by Patrick Carman. In addition, we will be talking with the author about his book on Tuesday, October 26th via Skype.
Four of the most haunted places in the United States are talked about in The Crossbones. Go online and see what information you can find about them.
Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery in Bachelor’s Grove, Chicago
Driskill Hotel in Austin, Texas
Winchester House in San Jose, California
Central High School in Springfield, Missouri
Portland Underground in Portland, Oregon

I’m so glad you are enjoying it Grayson. What do you think about the book’s format (part book, part video)?
i think this book was good i am soooooo sad that i have finished it and it leaves me wondering what will our next book be
what do you think will happen in the raven??? i think ryan will meet his friend that worked with him and his dad will try and kill ryan.
I love this book its fun and creepy at the same time!!!!
So glad you like it, Gabe. Is it keeping you up at night? 🙂
The book had a pretty good formatt, it was full of mystery, and no it did not keep me up at night. I just had some wierd dreams.
The book talks about four of the most haunted places in the United States. This is NOT fiction! Everyone do a Google search on them and see what you find.
Are we going to read other books by Carman Patrick?
Probably not. I want to give you guys different genres to read. I promise the next one will be just as awesome!
the book is going so great but i havent finshed it yet the wed chat with patrick carmen was awesome
i think the format of the book is cool. i hate looking at tiny print all the time. the format of the book adds to the voice wonderfully
Meeting patrick carman was really awesome i hope we will talk about some of his books in the distant but yet cool future. I also i am going to find proof that aliens exist and type it up on this very blog first!!!!!!!!:)
I’m looking forward to this “proof” Gabe. 🙂
are going to read another book of the same author
No, I want you guys to read another great book by another great author. More soon…
I loved how in the last Crossbones Film The Apostle shot fire and burned the card that was in his hand. Also, I found the way Ole’ Joe Bush’s Ghost jumped Ryan.
I read this book in one night! I had to read with a flashlight so that I wouldn’t get in trouble, but it definetly left an impression, maybe because I was reading in the dark… I didn’t go to sleep until two o’clock in the morning and I have to admit I kept peeking under my eyelids to look for Old Joe Bush! I adored it so much!
Ithink that the crossbones books are interesting enough but i like howw Pattrick Carmen involuntarily puts himself in the book’s characters. He makes it more real.
the book was great it gave a back ground story and helped people understand the back ground of the series the format is great and very fun to watch videos and read it gives new light to type of books that want to give the story life and real life relation
meeting with the author Patrick Carman was exciting and amazing because you usually dont get do do that the next book he gave hints on was amazing and fun to listen to i cant wait for the next book
i read the whole book in two days! it was awesomeee

I love this book and i want to see the next book
the best book ever ! what is the next one I can’t wait
I’m not telling, Grayson!! 🙂
love the book cant wait till we read our next one
who do you thnik is the stronger charactor? Sarah or Ryan. I think that sarah is the stromger charactor because she is more out going than ryan
13 we didnt see sarah on any of the videos in this book. why not? the reason why she didnt show her face was because if someone found out about it and got ahold of a password they would not know who did it.
10# How would you react if your parents tried to separate you from your best friend like Ryan’s and Sarah’s parants have? I would kill them
1. why do you think Patrick Carman chose to have Sarah go on the road trip across the US instead of both of them?
I think the reason he did that was to make the book more interesting and what it is like to hear and see the action but not do it like some kids and it also gives a more interesting story line to
How would you react if your parents tried to separate you from your best friend like Ryan’s and Sarah’s parents have?
I will be mad and sad, for one that person is my best friend and probaly like a sbrother or sister 2 me.Plus that person the only fiend I have
#2. Who do you think is the strongest character ,Sarah or Ryan? Why?
Ryan , probably because you read his side of the story and you dont here much of sarah.
the book was awsome i cant wait to read another book i want to visit some of those places
I love the new book
So glad you are enjoying it, Gabe. Make sure to comment on specific parts of the book you like or dislike.
hey why does he mention Springfield Missouri in the book?
I don’t remember where they mention it. Where is this in the book? Page?
I love the part where Eli puncheed his dad ,because his father lied to them about there being a nuclear war;}
Really?! While I agree that it was pretty twisted of his dad to lie to them for YEARS, I’m not sure punching a mentally unstable man is the answer. Thoughts?
is his dad really ill or mental?why would you lie about a nuclear war ?
I would question anyone’s mental state who tells a lie of this magnitude for years. Think about the children! What do the rest of you think about it? Great thoughts Samantha. Keep them coming.
wow that would be horrible to have a father who has lied to your whole life like that
would you be able to live with a father who has lied to you ?
it was cool but i think we should have read at least one more book
The books were okay
Wider lecetion required

The Great Wide Sea is kind of dull and it doesn’t have that many really happy parts in it. Also the dad is grouchy all the time.

I don’t get the storm part and I don’t get what happened to their dad.
I have two comments:
1.) When I read this book, it’s hard because my mind wonders off.

What advise would you give other authors? I love your book ‘The Great Wide Sea’ and would appreciate it if you could tell me how you got your ideas. 🙂
i rate the book a four star
I can’t wait till M.H Herlong comes to william james!!!!!:)
It was a very good book with a great story line, plot, and setting, however; it doesnt describe the characters enough so when something happens, you don’t really get the deep-hearted emotions that us wanted from books. so if you, as the author, describd the characters more, there is more reader-character relationships, therefore; making the book better.
What happened after the story? Did the dad remarry? What happened to the boys? Did they each find someone and get good jobs and go back to real school or do they stay homeschooled? Will you write a second book, making this a series? Will you do an alternate-ending book where Ben doesnt find a ship or village while his brother is dying? Will this book become a movie?
I finshed the book like two weeksago and loved it!!!!!!!!!!:)
My faverite part was when they went to the building and got kind-of arrested!
My faverite caharacter is ethir Lizzy or Mr.Oswaled:)
If you havent finshed the book you need to because whats in the box is totally unexpected!!!!!And its a really great book!!!:)

Stumbled across your page on pinterest. I’m trying to arrange a book club for my church. I don’t know if I will be able to use any of your ideas, but I just wanted to say – I think your ideas are wonderful! I was a very reluctant reader as a child. But, I would have loved to be part of a book club like this. Your school and your students are very lucky!
Thank you so much. Your comment made my day! I’m definitely the lucky one…I get to work in a job I love. I just hope I make a difference while I’m at it. 🙂 Hopefully you will find something here to help with your church book club. Please let me know if you find some good ideas too. I’m always looking for something new.
