I met with the Book Club this past week to give them their third book of the year….Wendelin Van Draanen’s The Running Dream. The selection is realistic fiction and I hope they like it as much as I do.

Jessica thinks her life is over when she loses a leg in a car accident. She’s not comforted by the news that she’ll be able to walk with the help of a prosthetic leg. Who cares about walking when you live to run?

As she struggles to cope with crutches and a first cyborg-like prosthetic, Jessica feels oddly both in the spotlight and invisible. People who don’t know what to say, act like she’s not there. Which she could handle better if she weren’t now keenly aware that she’d done the same thing herself to a girl with CP named Rosa. A girl who is going to tutor her through all the math she’s missed. A girl who sees right into the heart of her.

With the support of family, friends, a coach, and her track teammates, Jessica may actually be able to run again. But that’s not enough for her now. She doesn’t just want to cross finish lines herself—she wants to take Rosa with her.

Excellent Book

I couldn’t find a book trailer that I liked for this one so I decided to create my own.

I enjoyed the Bulloch County Technology Day held on January 4th at Southeast Bulloch High School and learned about so many great resources. Over 35 different sessions were held on topics such as podcasting, blogging, file management, computer maintenance, free educational software online, Photo Story 3, and Glogster. I taught the classes on What’s the Big Deal About Blogs? and Book Trailers: Not Your Typical Book Report.  I attended sessions on digital photo editing with GIMP, and using FLIP video cameras with Windows Movie Maker. Resources for the sessions can be found on our school’s Homer server in the Techday directory and RESA’s ETC page. Thanks so much to our county’s technology team for putting together such a great opportunity for faculty.

photo storyI worked with the 7th grade classes to create book trailers from favorite books the students had read. A book trailer is a video advertisement for a book which employs techniques similar to those of movie trailers.  We used a free program from Microsoft called Photo Story 3 to add pictures, title text, narration, motion, transitions, and music to the video. Once students completed the project, those who had returned permission forms were uploaded to my wiki.

flippedWhen Juli met her new neighbor Bryce, in second grade, she fell in love and he felt exactly the opposite. She loved his bright blue eyes and long black hair. He was the most popular guy in school.  He hated her ‘know-it-all attitude’ and thought she was just plain weird.  She knew the answer to everything and raised chickens in her backyard. For the past five years Juli has been chasing after Bryce while he has been avoiding her. Then everything flips. Bryce does some things that he regrets and causes Juli to hate him. Juli says, “I felt a cold, hard knot tighten in my heart. I was through with Bryce.” At the same time Bryce falls in love with Juli and  realizes there’s more to her than meets the eye.  Bryce says, ” I’d spent so many years avoiding Juli that I never really looked at her, but now I couldn’t stop.” Will they end up together or will she hate him forever? Find out in Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen.
